Kaieteur Sport is pleased to feature two more of the five honorees that were recognised by the Guyana Football Federation for exceptional service to football over the years.
We first featured Professor Aubrey Bishop; today we are pleased to feature former GFL and GFA Secretary Ivor O’Brien and Ms. Allison Peters who was also a former GFL Secretary. The following information was compiled by GFF Competition’s Committee Coordinator, Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith.
Ivor Ethelbert O’Brien – A former Police Officer, decided to change profession and focus his energies towards development of sports with football being his first choice. A shrewd and competent Administrator, this individual was first appointed as Secretary of the Guyana Police Football Section from 1975 to 1989. In that same year he was elected as Secretary of the then Georgetown Football League until 1985. In 1976 he was elected as the Assistant Secretary of the then GFA a position he held until 1980 when he was elevated to the position of General Secretary until 1984.
In 1982, O’Brien was elected Secretary of the Georgetown Football Club a position which he still holds, 29 years on.
As the GFF representative on the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) he was elected as Assistant Secretary General in 1976 to 1980 and in 1980 was elected Secretary General. He still holds that position, 31 years after being elected.
A father of three (3) girls, O’Brien was also the Assistant Director of Youth and Sports in the Ministry of Education from 1980 to 1991 and then Director – Department of Sports from 1991 to 1993. He served as Secretary of the National Sports Development Council.
He was General Manager at the CAC Games held in Havana Cuba in 1982, Commonwealth Games in Brisbane Australia in 1982, Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984 and Pan American Games in Indianapolis in 1987. He served as Chef de Mission at the Olympic Games in Seoul Korea in 1988; Commonwealth Games in Auckland in 1990 and the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992.
This versatile Administrator was also attached to the National Parks Commission and is a Director of the Thomas Lands YMCA. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Georgetown Central where he held the positions of Secretary and President.
He is the Assistant Governor of the Rotary District 7030 and the District Grand Secretary of District Grand Lodge of Guyana from 2006 to the present time.
Born on July 18, 1947 and happily married to June, O’Brien was the recipient of a National Award – Medal of Service for long and dedicated service in the field of sport, especially as an administrator and in the areas of Social and Community Service. He is also the Recipient of a Continental Award – Pan American Order of Merit for contribution to sport in the Pan American Region.
The GFF Honoree is currently employed at John Fernandes Ltd. as the Human Resource Manager.
Ms. Allison Peters has been associated with football for a number of years. Ms. Peters and her brother the late Philip ‘Blackeye’ Peters attended numerous football matches as children. Phillip joined GFC as a goalkeeper and later, Thomas United F.C.
Immediately Ms. Peters started to support Thomas United and became one of their most vocal supporters, never missing a match be it morning, noon or night.
In 1988 she was elected Secretary of TUFC until 1994. In 1990 Ms. Peters was elected to serve as Secretary of the then Georgetown Football League, the first female to do so.
Ever since 1989, Ms. Peters has been involved in the Rice Industry holding many positions including Regional Manager and Quality Control Manager at Alesie. Presently, Ms. Peters is the Quality Control Manager of GREB.
A mother of one daughter this football fan was approached by clubs including Santos FC to get involved in their Administrative arm but her work commitments have prevented her from doing so at the moment. Her daughter is a supporter of opposing clubs and at matches they can be heard supporting their respective clubs in a friendly but aggressive manner.
Ms. Peters’ brother who was an excellent goalkeeper passed away in his prime as he tried to achieve his goal of donning national colours.
This GFF honoree was his staunchest fan and supporter; she could be heard screaming above the others voices when the Thomas United goal was being threatened by shouting, “Save Blackeye, Save Blackeye.”
Ms. Peters can be seen at all national games as well as local club matches. However she has not ruled out the prospect of being coerced back into the administration of football, a sport she dearly loves.
