But no cricket expected at waterlogged Bourda
By Sean Devers
Leon Johnson has been replaced in the Guyana squad by fellow left-hander Gajanand Singh due to a finger injury but the possibility of any play in their Regional four-day second round match against the Leeward Islands scheduled to commence today is very remote due to a waterlogged Bourda ground.
Heavy and persistent rain for most of the night and early yesterday morning left the famous Georgetown ground, the venue for the first ever West Indies Test victory in 1930, almost totally under water for all of yesterday.
The ground, which no longer hosts International cricket in Guyana since the Guyana National Stadium was built for the 2007 World Cup, looked like a huge lake with only the covered pitch being visible above water on yesterday.
A keen contest was anticipated since both teams, coming off first round defeats, were looking to rebound with a win here but since the forecast is for more rain until Sunday, a no-result, with four points for each team looks the most likely result.Guyana’s last outright win at this level was against the Leewards last year in Trinidad but they have lost nine times and won just eight of the 32 matches between the two sides since the Leewards separated from the Combined Islands in 1980.
Despite a maiden century from left-hander Keiron Powell, the Leewards lost by an innings and 120 runs against England ‘A’ in their opening game at Warner Park in St Kitts.
The Guyanese, led by a five-wicket haul from Test pacer Brendon Bess, took first innings points from defending Champions Jamaica in their last game but lost ‘outright’ after a magnificent Marlon Samuels double-century saw Jamaica to 391 in their second innings. Set 359 to win the South Americans were bowled out for 193.
Under new Captain Assad Fudadin, the Guyanese played competitive cricket and were in the game until they lost all of their second innings wickets in the first two sessions on the final day and the team was anxious to get a win here to increase on their four points and stay in contention for their seventh title and first since 1998.
The last time the Leewards won a First-Class title was also in 1998 when they shared it with Guyana and they are hunting their fifth title this season.
The Leewards team is hoping to use the indoor practice facility at LBI since both teams have been kept indoors after arriving in Guyana on Tuesday evening.
Efforts were being made to play the match at Guyana National Stadium at Providence. However, the fastest drying ground in the Region and the only venue capable of hosting a cricket match at this time here is unavailable due to a previously booked event.
