A couple, who allegedly abducted a bailiff for Scotiabank as he attempted to repossess a vehicle, was yesterday charged with the offence of wrongful confinement.
Earl Fredericks, 32, and his reputed wife Janet Johnson, 41, of A-61 East La Penitence, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. They are alleged to have committed the offence on 60-year-old William Blackman of 2539 Layou Street, North Ruimveldt. Blackman is a Retired First Marshall of the High Court and a serving Rural Constable.
According to police prosecutor, Stephen Telford, on Tuesday last (February 8) the two accused wrongfully confined Blackman by preventing him from proceeding to his place of employment at Scotiabank, Carmichael Street.
Blackman reported that he was at James’ Texaco Gas Station, and was in the process of repossessing the vehicle, GLL 7475, a black Nissan Titan, on behalf of the bank, when Fredericks wound up the windows, preventing him from accessing the ignition key.
Blackman told Fredericks of his instructions and Fredericks reportedly agreed to go to the bank and settle the issue. The repossession officer requested to sit in the vehicle but Fredericks refused, instead, telling him to sit in the tray.
Blackman then jumped into the tray of the vehicle which he claims Fredericks drove off at breakneck speed along Mandela Avenue and eventually up the East Bank of Demerara.
The complainant said that although he banged at the window between the cabin and the tray, the man continued to drive the vehicle to an unknown destination.
Clinging on to the vehicle, Blackman managed to use his cell phone to call for help. Eventually, a police roadblock at Grove Rublic Road led to the interception of the vehicle and the rescue of Blackman.
The couple’s lawyer, Trenton Lake, in his bail application told the court that his clients have no previous convictions and are not flight risks. He added that Jones is gainfully employed as a director at AC&J Incorporated.
Magistrate Octive-Hamilton granted the accused $60,000 bail each and ordered them to return to court today.
