Complaints by residents of Mocha, East Bank Demerara, that rehabilitation works being done by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), are being stymied by stockpiled material owned by Courtney Benn Contracting Services Limited (CBCSL), seem not to have not fallen on deaf ears.
An official from the NDIA disclosed that “with regard to Courtney Benn Company Ltd, the company has indicated their willingness to remove the stock piled material to allow rehabilitation works by the NDIA to take place. The NDIA has already begun rehabilitation works on some sections of the Mocha main drain.”
It was further revealed that works undertaken by NDIA in Mocha indicate that 95% of the canals were cleaned, these being: Drainage canals – 1550 rods, Cross canal – 4050 rods, Middle Walk Canal North – 750 rods, Middle Walk Canal South – 750 rods , Block B Canal North – 750 rods and Block B Canal North – 750 rods.
The official noted that the cleaning involved removing all vegetation and debris from the channels, while irrigation tubes were placed to get water into Mocha. In addition, the NDIA has a Community Drainage and Irrigation Project (CDIP) workers’ group undertaking cleaning and clearing in the area.
