Dear Editor,
The PPP has issued a release saying that so far five of their prominent members have offered themselves as presidential candidates. The easiest, most democratic and acceptable way of choosing a presidential candidate is as follows:-
Any eligible and serious candidate should be allowed to offer himself/herself. It seems that some forces behind the scene are preventing other eligible candidates from coming forward. For example, Dr Ashni Singh or Mr. Robert Persaud could be suitable candidates.
(ii) The list of the prospective candidates should be passed to the party groups to make their choice. (This would help to revive those party groups which have almost fizzled out.) This process will eliminate most of the candidates, leaving two.
(iii) A Congress should then be convened specifically to choose the Party’s candidate for the elections from the two. Voting must be by secret ballot. Persons of integrity unconnected with the Party officers or hierarchy should be asked to conduct such elections.
If such a procedure is used, it would cause less discord among the prospective candidates and their respective supporters; it will cut out the assumption that some person or persons could influence the elections by use of machinations or offer of favours; and it would obviously be a more democratic and acceptable procedure, since it would remove the choice of the candidate from the mere 30 persons who form the General Council of the Party to the entire membership.
If the procedure proposed is done, the unity of the Party would be strengthened; PPP members and supporters would be given a new focus since they would be involved. And finally, this injection of democracy would vitalize the Party which has fallen into semi-morbidity. (President Dr Jagdeo has personally kept the Party alive),
If this suggested procedure is not done, a larger percentage of PPP supporters/members would abstain from voting at the coming elections – a much larger percentage than at the last election.
