The British High Commission on Tuesday donated two computers and one printer to the Women’s Gender Equality Commission with the aim of further boosting the skills and services offered by the entity.
At the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) building, Peter Rose and Anira Streets, Queenstown, during the short handing over ceremony, Chairperson Indra Chandarpal stated that the women’s group originated in August 2009 and began officially serving the public in May 2010, after holding internal elections to select a Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.
She explained that to date a lot of work has been successfully completed by the Women’s Gender Equality Commission, with its mandate being very broad-based, and she expressed hope that all commissioners would continue to strive for excellence by serving whole-heartedly.
British High Commissioner, Simon Bond, told the gathering that his office was more than happy to respond to the request by the body since the High Commission recognizes the role that the group plays in society and fully endorses it.
The envoy explained that in Guyana there is a lot of emphasis being placed in the public sphere about violence against women and women’s rights and the High Commission understands that there is a wide range of issues which the women will have to address, and with the little assistance provided on this occasion, it is hoped that more work will be completed in a shorter period of time.
High Commissioner Bond stated that Guyana has a “good representation of women in Parliament, the Judiciary and also in the Public Sector” while explaining that from his perspective, he would like to see more women being leaders in the business sector.
