Hundreds of students gathered in front of the National Cultural Centre yesterday because they were not allowed to enter the building. NCC hosted the “Children’s Mashramani Competition dance 2 and Masquerade”. Too many tickets were distributed, thus seating accommodations were not available.
One child who was on the stairs of NCC was pushed off and assaulted by a male police officer. That caused a hostile reaction from the few parents that were on the scene.
One mother said that had it been her child that the officer mistreated “they would a got to lock me up”.
The woman said that in the event that the officer wanted the girl to be removed forcefully, he should have got a female officer to do so. She opinioned that it was dominantly school children that were there and teachers should have been the ones to handle the matter. “Why they sell tickets that them ain’t got space for?” the angry parent queried.
Eventually, Principal Education Officer, Marcel Hudson addressed the students. In an effort to “calm the situation” Hudson told the students that all those who were in possession of “tickets for today” could present them to their teachers to be refunded their monies.
When confronted about the incident between the schoolgirl and the police rank, Hudson said that he would report the matter to the commander. “I cannot do anything else about that,” he added.
