SOLID West Indies middle-order batsman Brendan Nash has recovered sufficiently from injury to be a part of the Jamaican delegation which departed Tuesday en route to Grenada for the second-round WICB four-day match against the Windward Islands this weekend.
Nash, 31, retired hurt on 25 with a thigh strain in the second innings against Guyana on Sunday after sharing in a 97-run third-wicket stand with Marlon Samuels, who made 250 not out as Jamaica rushed to a 165-run win.
Jamaica’s Trinidadian coach Augustine Logie told the Observer moments before the team left for the airport yesterday that Nash would be making the trip. “He will be travelling with us today. The information we received is that it is a little tightness in the hamstring which we believe in a few days, with a little rest and physiotherapy, he should be OK for the game on Friday,” said Logie.
Three-time defending champions Jamaica recovered well after losing first-innings points to defeat Guyana and are joint leaders with the invited England Lions and Combined Campuses & Colleges (CC) on 12 points.
The Tamar Lambert-led side will take on the Windward Islands — on four points — starting on Friday and Logie expects the necessary improvements to be made.
Said Logie: “We expect a continuation of improvement from the players. We’ve asked for high standards and have seen where individuals have stepped up to the plate. “Marlon Samuels scoring 250 not out on a pitch where nobody else got 50 …shows the level of his concentration and mental strength as well,” he added.
“Odean Brown taking five wickets, and eight in the game; Jerome Taylor stepped up to the plate, and we’re asking other players to ride that wave of success from those individuals to certainly propel the team to higher heights,” said the former West Indies vice-captain.
“We believe that we’re on the right track; we’re working hard as individuals and as a team and we expect continued improvement performances as we go along,” noted Logie, who served as West Indies coach between 2003 and October 2004.
In his first stint as Jamaica’s coach in the four-day version of the game, Logie saw his team bowled out for a paltry 150 in their first innings and trail Guyana by 33 on first innings before recovering magnificently for a massive win. He, therefore, believes they are on the right path to defending their title.
“In every game that you play there are going to be areas where we feel that we never capitalised, but collectively, we feel very good at where we are,” he said.
Jamaica which will play three successive matches down the islands. They are also scheduled to play Barbados on February 18-21 at Kensington Oval before tackling Leewards Islands on February 25-28 at Warner Park in St Kitts. The competition will then take a break between March 1-10, with fifth-round action resuming with Jamaica versus Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) at Chedwin Park on March 11-14.
The champions will then play two matches at Sabina Park, against Trinidad and Tobago on March 18 and England Lions on March 25-28.
The semi-finals are scheduled for April 1-4 and will be hosted by the two higher-placed teams, with the final starting on April 8 also to be hosted by the higher-placed team.
