When Miguel Antoine came to Guyana last December to face off with Shawn Pyle in the tenth edition of the ProAm boxing cards he had just surrendered his Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) title by default.
Pyle was to have traveled to Barbados to oppose Antoine for the title but suffered a setback after dropping a decision to Mark Austin in the 6th edition of the ProAm boxing card.
Fans would remember oh so well that Antoine dished out a first class licking on Pyle and had him tottering around the ring until the referee mercifully called a halt to the contest in Antoine’s favour.
Naturally, fans deduced that it was Austin’s turn to prove his mettle against Antoine and the organizers did not baulk in their duties to provide qualitative action for the boxing hungry public.
This month end, Friday 28, Austin will be required to put up his guards against Antoine in what many feel is the sternest test for the Guyanese pugilist to date. Can he avenge his countryman or will Austin suffer a similar fate?
The slimly built pugilist admitted that the bout would be his toughest to date and has intensified his training regiment to enhance his chances of a victory.
He has been on the Linden/Soesdyke highway over the past weekend utilizing the hills and sandpits to hone his fitness to maximum level. He returned from the Linden sojourn on Monday afternoon last and resumed training at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing gym under the hawk eyes of his trainer and mentor, George ‘Kanchi’ Oprecht.
He commenced sparring sessions and his approach to his work signals fireworks in the ring this month end. Austin also spent some time on the heavy bag practicing his power shots and foot placement among other techniques. “This bout is very important and we do not intend to lose,” declared Oprecht. He said that his charge has already begun to peak and he (Oprecht) would have to monitor his (Austin) sessions so that the boxer does not over train. Austin also sparred several rounds against Kwesi ‘Assassin’ Jones and Winston Pompey and his coach is beaming at his progress.
Meanwhile, Mandessa Moses, guided by Lennox ‘Cappel’ Daniels, was also hard at work. Respected for her demolition of Alisa Marques in an earlier edition of the ProAm cards, Moses attacked the pads with venom shortly after a 4 rounds sparring session with Anthony Augustin. Daniels feels that his charge will demolish Veronica Blackman in their heavyweight clash. “Mandessa has cultivated a remarkable work ethic and she will win this bout easily,” said Daniels.
The boxers continue training sessions this afternoon from 16:00hrs at the ALBG, Albouystown and fans may visit the venue to assess their condition and application.
