Former Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), Major General (rtd), Joe Singh, has been named to head up the under-fire Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC). Singh replaced Ronald Webster, a business executive, who served at the helm of that mining regulatory body for a while. He retired on July 31, last year, shortly after GT&T commissioned its US$30M fibre optic cable.
The official, who joined the army in 1966 and retired as its chief in 2000, presiding over the Guyana Elections Commission for a while before he took over GT&T as the CEO for five years.
Singh’s appointment at GGMC will come at a time when the mining industry is going through a number of key regulatory changes.
Last year, Government appointed a special body to examine a number of measures to better regulate the industry.
The appointment of the former GT&T official has been seen as signal by some of sterner approach by government to the industry.
Recently, President Bharrat Jagdeo had threatened to use the army to police the interior to help stamp out corruption in GGMC.
GGMC’s Commissioner (ag), William Woolford, had indicated that the body stands willing to act but evidence must be presented.
Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, a former head of the GGMC, in expressing “surprise” at Woolford’s statements, had called for an urgent review of the leadership of the body.
