– Engineer inspects volume of work
Incumbent president of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), Trevor Rose has indicated that the new backboards he received for Burnham Court last week will be erected before weekend, following an inspection that was done yesterday.
“I have somebody, an engineer, that will be looking at it today (yesterday); from my inspections I discovered that there will have to be some adjustments to the current structure that is up. If not, the backboards we brought in wouldn’t fit properly,” Rose said.
Rose received a pair of new professional backboards, a pair of rims and nets that the GABA had bought through local basketball stakeholder, the Haynes Basketball Foundation. The items were cleared from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport last week.
The equipment was procured as part of what is an extensive overhaul of the previous deplorable Burnham Court. It was part of the Burnham Court Rehabilitation Project that Rose piloted when he took office two years ago. Other works have also been done.
“I want to ensure that these boards are up before the elections, which means that they will have to be up before this weekend,” Rose told Kaieteur Sport yesterday. The GABA Annual General Meeting and Elections was set for Sunday after one postponement.
So far, Burnham Court has since benefitted from a renovated western bleacher, resurfacing and the erection of players’ benches that are incomplete. However, those works are secondary in the general development plan for the popular outdoor basketball facility.
The facility will cost an estimated $22m to bring it to the level that the GABA intends. Burnham Court has been the enduring home of the Courts Pacesetters and Bounty Colts’ Basketball Clubs, which have both suffered from the removal of a northern backboard.
The National Sports Commission had taken down the backboard during the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) after one of the Surinamese players broke the southern board at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall last year. The board on ‘Burnham’ was a Sports Commission loan. (Edison Jefford)
