– Josiah-Tanner out, Collins could be included
President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, Colin Boyce informed yesterday that the team selected to represent Guyana at the upcoming prestigious North America, Central American and the Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Race will definitely compete.
While there were no financial issues publicly raised as it relates to sending the full-fledged team to compete in the race in Tobago next week, there is always a concern, as it has been in the past, over national sports teams procuring the necessary funding to travel to international meets.
But Boyce, with his insistence on sending teams abroad to compete, told Kaieteur Sport that the governing body for athletics in Guyana has since managed to secure airline tickets for those who will attempt to do better than Guyana’s third place finish last year.
The association had named Cleveland Forde, Dennis Horatio, Wilbert Mingo, Cleveland Thomas Nathanie Giddings and Region Nine’s, Hezron Pedro following the local race last month. Doretta Wilson and Alika Morgan are the two females that complete the team. In addition to those already identified, the association had expressed an interest in United States-based Guyanese distance athlete, Euleen Josiah-Tanner. However, Boyce confirmed yesterday in a brief conversation that Josiah-Tanner has indicated her unavailability. He said that the athlete, who placed second at the CLICO International Marathon in Trinidad and Tobago in 2008, regrettably informed the association of her unavailability and related her interest in competing locally and representing the country in future engagements.
Boyce informed this newspaper that it is likely that Trinidad and Tobago-based former national junior athlete; Oslyn Collins could be drafted into the team as the association continues to search for methods to strengthen the female team that include Wilson and Morgan.
The team is expected to depart Guyana on February 18 and return on February 20. The NACAC Cross Country race usually attracts some of the best distance runners from the respective regions and will pose a serious challenge to the Guyanese.
