GuySuCo Training Centre defeated Port Mourant Jaguars 17-15 to capture the ‘All Fours’ Volleyball Fiesta which was organised to celebrate the 72nd Birth Anniversary of President of the Federation Lenox Shuffler and played last Sunday, at the National Park.
Players from Berbice and West Demerara journeyed to Georgetown and braved intermittent rainfall to participate in the day’s activity.
The Fiesta which was played in a very friendly and convivial atmosphere attracted three teams from the GuySuCo Training Centre, three from Albion Community Centre, two from Young Achievers of Goed Fortuin and one from Port Mourant Jaguars Volleyball Club.
At the opening ceremony, Shuffler thanked the players for attending and indicated that the event will become an annual affair for a lien trophy.
Among those present at the Fiesta were, Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) President and GVF General Secretary Gregory Rambarran, GVF and BVA Vice-President and current National Senior Coach Levi Nedd (who also played for one of the teams), GVF PRO John Flores of the GDF Coast Guard, GVF Asst. Secretary Amanda Hermanstine of GPF, Committee Member Nicholas Fraser of the Allied Arts Unit, Under 19 Female Coach Trevor Smith and Referee Lennox Rowe.
Despite the rain, the action on court was fast and furious and the matches were keen and competitive.
After the final, Shuffler thanked and congratulated the players, but lamented the absence of female players.
He revealed that plans are afoot to resuscitate the Demerara Volleyball Association and expressed special thanks to Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall for contributing towards the success of the event.
Nedd in his remarks called on persons who are interested in being trained as coaches to make contact with him. The versatile Nedd, who is also an accomplished chutney/Soca singer, led the players in singing “Happy Birthday” to Shuffler who has been involved in Volleyball in Guyana since 1958.
