Referring to the Company as the best network that associates only with the best, GT&T’s Chief Financial Officer Royston Rachpaul presented a replica cheque worth $1million to Manager of the Guyana National Sevens Rugby squad Robin Roberts in the Company’s Canteen Monday.
The largesse represents GT&T’s continued support towards the sport of rugby and is to assist the team’s attendance at the IRB Sevens World Series which is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, USA on February 12-13, at the Sam Boyd Stadium.
GT&T’s Chief Financial Officer Royston Rachpaul (second right) hands over the replica cheque to Manager of the National Sevens Rugby team Robin Roberts in the presence of Union officials and the team.
Rachpaul in his brief remarks disclosed that the occasion is a proud one for the Company, adding that the sport has always benefitted from their support and it is simply because they are the best at what they do.
“We are the best network and we always associate ourselves with the best. We’ve supported athletes such as Hugh Ross and the national power lifters in the past and we all know of their outstanding achievements,” Rachpaul announced.
He wished the team the best on behalf of the Executives and Staff and urged them to make Guyana proud once again.
President of the Union Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento in his opening comments revealed that GT&T is in its 5th year of support for the sport that started with the West Indies team of which some five Guyanese were part of and that lasted for the first three years.
“Over the past two years, the Company’s assistance has been responsible for the national Sevens team participation in all of its overseas and local international assignments and I want to thank them on behalf of the Union and the fraternity at large,” Nascimento said.
He spoke some of the achievement of the team and why corporate support is so critical if they are to continue to attain the high level of success that they’ve enjoyed over the past five years.
“Corporate support is absolutely essential if Guyana is going to produce world class teams and athletes,” Nascimento reminded. Guyana open their quest for glory against Series leaders England and play its second game against Argentina followed by the clash with France, who they drew with last year.
Manager Robin Roberts thanked GT&T on behalf of the Union.
Meanwhile, original member of the squad Dane Parks will miss the tournament due to an injury to his shoulder which occurred during a practice session on Sunday at the National Stadium. His place has been taken by Christopher Singh, who was originally one of three standbys.
The full squad reads: Theodore Henry (Captain), Ryan Gonsalves (Vice-Captain), Claudius Butts, Ronald Mayers, Avery Corbin, Peabo Hamilton, Walter George, Leon Greaves, Elwin Chase, Rupert Giles and Dominic Lespierre. The team’s physiotherapist is Arianne Mangar and they depart early this morning.
