Recently, schools in the West Demerara district have been experiencing a number of bomb scares. Further, Patentia Primary school experienced two such occurrences in an eight-day span.
This newspaper understands that at around 11:58 hrs yesterday the school received a phone call from an individual who sounded like a young male, who said that “20 bombs are in the school”.
A source from the school said that the person was asked “Which bomb? You put it there?” The caller replied, “This man serious”.
Sources said that immediately after the call, all students vacated the premises under teachers’ supervision. The police and fire department were informed and responded promptly.
A teacher expressed that with approximately one and a half months remaining before Grade Six assessments, disturbances such as these can have a “bad effect” on students and the completion of the syllabus is being delayed since every time there is a bomb scare, sessions are cancelled for the entire day.
Further, the woman said that the attendance level has significantly dropped from the last such incident to yesterday.”
The woman predicted that many pupils would not attend school today (Wednesday) “… this is not good at all”.
On Monday, last, Patentia Secondary had a bomb scare as well. Teachers said that on that occasion they received a call, informing them that four bombs were in the school. This publication understands that that incident occurred around 9:30am. Teachers revealed that school was supposed to have resumed after lunch but few student remained. The two schools are a few buildings apart.
A bomb squad arrived on the scene to inspect the building but found nothing.
Police ranks on the scene yesterday said that, “every living day is a report about bombs in schools… they threaten bomb in the primary and secondary schools, all left is the nursery and the estate”.
However a rank disclosed that they have to take each case seriously since one can never tell when it may not be a hoax.
