Junior distance athlete, Doretta Wilson is now centralised in Lethem following her selection to the national team that will represent Guyana at the North American and the Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships in Tobago.
Wilson previously resided in Achawuib in the Deep South of the Rupununi and her unimaginable journeys to compete in Georgetown were well chronicled in this section of the media; they raised serious concerns about the well-being of the promising athlete.
Wilson travelled eight hours on a dirt-bike from Achawuib to Lethem then another one and half hour to Georgetown via air last month to compete at the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) National Cross Country Race that acted as trials for NACAC event.
Head Coach attached to the Rupununi Athletics and Sports Academy (RASA), Brian Rodrigues, had told Kaieteur Sport that Wilson would be given priority and that she had gone to her home to return to Lethem to establish a base. He confirmed the movement yesterday.
Following her two outstanding performances last year when she defeated CARIFTA Games gold medallist, Jevina Straker, and her Junior Cross Country win, Wilson was selected among eight of Guyana’s elite distance on the NACAC Cross Country team.
Apart from RASA, the Hinterland Youth and Sports Development Association (HYSDA) made a special effort to ensure that the athlete was given special attention when they formalised the body last Saturday at the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) Headquarters.
President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Colin Boyce procured funding from the Godfrey Bovell Construction Company to purchase road-running shoes for the athlete. The AAG president handed over the sneakers to HYSDA Saturday afternoon.
