The final closing of the Le Repentir dumpsite will take longer than expected as the work will now have to be tendered out. This is according to Government Engineer, Walter Willis, who met with members of the media yesterday.
According to Willis, given the fact that some closed cells had to be reopened due to the heavy influx of garbage in the latter part of 2010 and earlier this year thus making additional work for Puran Brothers, who were contracted to close the site.
According to Willis the closing of the site was contracted out at a cost of $40M. “We had to stop the contractors to make more space for garbage.”
“Given the magnitude of work that now needs to be done we held discussions with the Inter American Development Bank.” Willis said that during the discussion with the IDB they decided that they will go back to tender which will take another four weeks.
After the four weeks then a contractor will be decided on. Work will commence at the site. Willis however could not say what will be the cost for closing the site. The closure includes the stabilizing of the side slope of the pile, compacting the garbage, inserting of vents for dissipation of the gases mainly methane and carbon dioxide, and then covering with 18 inches of clay.
“The surveyors will have to do their work within another week and we will have to submit that figure to the IDB, once that figure is available we will make it available to the press.”
He said that if all goes well with the tender process the closing of the site will be done as expected without any harm to person living within the environs.
“The same method worked well for the closing of one which was done in 2009 under the Guyana Solid Waste Management Programme,” Willis said ever since the closing of that and other cells there has been no report of illnesses.
Meanwhile responding to question about tombs being desecrated by garbage, Willis said that the Sexton has not reported any such matter to them. “I strongly don’t believe in doing that likewise Minister Benn if that did happen it was not done deliberately.”
Willis however noted that as part of the closing of the site, the drains and spaces between tombs will be cleared.
