Technical Director (TD) of the Guyana Sevens team Canadian Spencer Robinson speaking with the media shortly after GT&T presented the Union with sponsorship to attend the IRB International Sevens World Series in Las Vegas, USA informed that the team is riding high on confidence.
Robinson, who arrived on Saturday last after being delayed by the snowstorm that brought air travel in and out of the USA to a virtual standstill admitted that even though the quality of the opposition at such high level tournaments are usually unknown, he expects the team to equip itself properly and show some fighting spirit.
He said that the loss of at least three of the team’s best players in Richard Staglon, Kevin McKenzie and Albert LaRose is crucial, but he still anticipates that the current members will produce a whole hearted effort during the Series.
Spencer also informed that to add the sudden loss of the speedy Dane Parks, who suffered a terrible shoulder injury during practice, to those three players have created a severe setback to the team.
“We lost another player (Parks) on Sunday, but we all know that this sport is very physical and other players have to be ready to step up and replace those that are either injured or absent for whatever reason (s),” Robinson stated.
The TD said Parks is a special player, who brought pure breakaway speed to the team and that is such an important feature in Sevens rugby.
Robinson reminded that the great thing about Sevens rugby is that if a team builds momentum and play very physical, you could create problems to the best teams.
He reckoned that the tournament will be just as tough as the one last year, adding that teams do not have the luxury of being in an easy Pool, but rather all teams have to be at their level best to advance into the competition.
The TD admitted that he has sought to put everyone on the same page and improve the quality of play since his arrival which has been well received by the players.
He mentioned players such as former Captain Claudius Butts, Theodore Henry, Ryan Gonsalves and Ronald Mayers will have to step up and take control if Guyana stands a chance of advancing.
“These guys are all very experienced players at the international level and I expect them to meet the challenge and lead those who’re relatively new to the higher level,” Robinson said.
He mentioned the injury to Rupert Giles as another disadvantage, but is hoping that he gets well in time to be considered for selection.
