…he worked on dead drag racer’s vehicle
Less than 24 hours later yet another road fatality has been recorded bringing the figure to an alarming 17 deaths resulting from 17 accidents this year.
Just after noon, yesterday, 50-year-old Errol Gonsalves was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Center.
Reports are that the man collided with a minibus which was turning into the Bougainvillea Housing Scheme at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara.
According to police reports, the driver of minibus BLL 939 was allegedly proceeding along the roadway at a fast rate, when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the rear of the motor cycle.

The police reports also stated that the minibus struck down a pedestrian Harrisa Mohamed, of Agricola Public Road.
However the police report totally contradicts eyewitnesses’ account of what transpired.
A security guard who witnessed the accident said he was in a minibus when he noticed the man on a CBR ‘flying’ pass him.
“This man overtake the bus I went in and he overtake one ah dem big Linden bus…I see this bus turning into the housing scheme and I seh to meself that is death.”
“This man slam head on into the middle ah de bus. This bus get hit on the left side.”
“After overtaking a Linden bus there was a long line of traffic and a ‘Bounty Farm bus’ coming from the northern direction was turning into Bougainvillea Gardens when the CBR had no other option but to slam into the bus because he was speeding and had nowhere else to turn.
“He had to have wings to not crash into that bus.” This was another eyewitness account of what transpired.
This was clear too as there was no damage to the back or front of the minibus as reported by the police. Damage was only evident to the mid section of the minibus.
Another eyewitness told this publication that after the bike slammed into the minibus the bus struck a girl who was standing in the corner.
There are also reports that the minibus turned without putting on its indicator.
The injured Gonsalves and Mohamed were rushed to the hospital by public-spirited citizens. Gonsalves was pronounced dead on arrival and Mohamed was treated and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. The teen was admitted, further treated and subsequently admitted.
The dead man’s wife, Cheryl Gonsalves, said that she saw her husband alive mere minutes before receiving news of the accident.
“Riding is what he love; I couldn’t stop him with his bike, before he left home I say, ‘Boy put on your helmet and be safe’. That was the last thing I told him.”
At the hospital the woman broke down and had to be assisted by close friends from the motor racing fraternity who had all converged at the hospital.
Many of the man’s close friends, including Stephen and Mark Vieira, were all moved to tears at the sight of his body which lay on a stretcher at the hospital. At the time of the accident the man was reportedly heading to a location on East Bank Demerara to run an errand.
Those who lost their lives on our road so far for the year are Jermaine Frank, 26 – passenger killed in accident at Houston, EBD; Mark Seebarran, 30 – pedal cyclist of Lusignan struck by motor car HB 7825; Rajkumar Basdeo, 47 – motorcyclist of Line Path Skeldon struck by motor van GMM 1564; Julian Mohabir, 23 – passenger in motor car that struck utility pole near Canje Bridge; Owen Anthony Elliot, 49 – Stabroek News driver killed at Little Diamond E.B.D; Naomi Nedd, 21 (and pregnant) – passenger killed in motor car driven by her mother that crashed into tree at Kuru Kuru; Terrence McAllister, 24 – motorcyclist who crashed into culvert at Stanleytown W.B.D; Beverly Denny, 40 – passenger of minibus driven by her husband. She was killed at Lance Gibbs and Oronoque Streets; Mahendra Ojha, 46 – pedestrian struck down by motor vehicle at Rumzeight, WCD; Shindradat Dhanraj, 63, – cyclist struck down my minibus on No. 11 Public Road, WCB; David Kofoi, 34 – cyclist struck by motor car at Better Hope, ECD; Visham Seeram,21 – passenger of minibus that crashed at Pearl, EBD; Andrew Hanover, 45 – pedestrian struck by motor car PMM 3202 at Victoria, ECD; Raymond Ally, 22 – motorist killed in accident at Houston, EBD; and David Yokuba-killed on the Better Hope Public Road.
