In a career that has spanned less than two years to date, 18-year-old cyclist Paul De Nobrega has already established himself as a potent force on the local circuit.
De Nobrega in his first year of competition after hitting the cycling circuit in November of 2009 achieved three major victories. He took the junior category in the annual Three-Stage road race held on May 15-16; junior category at the annual Five-Stage contest November 4-6 and on November 21 he was triumphant in the Inter-Guiana Games 40-mile road race beating opponents from Suriname and French Guiana.
The performances of De Nobrega have not gone unnoticed with Canada based Guyanese rider, the veteran Joseph ‘Uncle Joe’ Faria one of many who have been following closely, the progress of De Nobrega.
Faria, recently presented De Nobrega with a racing cycle that has seen him maintaining top performances as witnessed in the feature school boys and invitational 35-lap contest on Saturday last at the newly resurfaced circuit at the National Park.
De Nobrega who started the race slowly and at one time seemed to be struggling, stormed back to whip an experienced field in the 18th edition of the Ricks and Sari sponsored Meet.
‘Uncle Joe’ was on hand to witness the victory and could have been seen encouraging the young rider during the course of the race. At the conclusion he exclaimed, “You see what my young rider did, he performed well again.”
In an invited comment, Faria said that from the first time he saw De Nobrega, he was impressed with the way he performs and the cool nature in how he achieves.
The 69-year-old Faria who himself still competes, said that he rode in Guyana for two years before migrating to Canada in 1969 where he took a prolonged break from the sport. He returned again in 2003 and has since maintained a more consistent presence even though he is still back and forth between Guyana and Canada.
Given his love for the sport and his yearning to see that the young generation of riders are fully equipped to perform, ‘Uncle Joe’ informed that he will be presenting a starters cycle to another young promising rider who he is still to identify.
“I will be doing that either before I return to Canada later this month or when I return later this year.”
De Nobrega will be aiming to maintain consistent performances as the season progresses and is expected to be Guyana’s leading rider at the upcoming Inter-Guiana Games.
He will be in action again this weekend when the National Sports Commission (NSC) runs off their annual Mashramani 11-race Meet on Saturday at the National Park on Sunday, the approximately 40-mile road race on the West Demerara which will pedal off from the Demerara Harbour Bridge proceed to Bushy park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the starting line for the finish.
