Twenty-eight-year-old Leg-spinner Odean Browne captured his 11th five-wicket haul to help defending champions Jamaica beat Guyana by 165 runs at the Alpart ground yesterday on the final day of their opening round Regional four-day cricket match.
Set 359 to win, Guyana, despite a solid 77-run opening stand between Rajendra Chandrika (47) and Shemroy Barrington (31) and a cameo 32 from Derwin Christian, crashed to 193 all out 45 minutes before Tea to sink to their fifth defeat in their last six games against Jamaica since 2007.
Browne, in his 41st match at this level finished with 5-69 while Test pacer Jerome Taylor supported with 3-40 and Skipper Tamar Lambert 2-43 for Jamaica, the Regional four-day champions since 2008.
Guyana, who took first innings points on the second day, return home tonight with four points while Jamaica, spearheaded to victory by a magnificent unbeaten 250 from Man-of-the-Match Marlon Samuels, collected 12 points.
Guyana has not taken first innings points in an opening round of a Regional First Class match since 2001 and yesterday they began the final day on 58-0, needing another 301 to win or to bat out the day for a draw and first innings points.
Rajendra Chandrika added 10 to his overnight 37 before when three away from his second fifty at this level, he was trapped LBW to Jerome Taylor, 30 minutes into the day’s play to end his 77-run opening stand with Shemroy Barrington who began the final day on 19.
Chandrika’s 47 lasted 121 minutes, 82 balls and included 3 fours and a six and his demise was soon followed by that of Barrington, whose loose drive at off-spinner Tamar Lambert was taken at slip to leave Guyana on 88-2. Barrington’s 31 came from 97 balls and 145 minutes and he hit three boundaries.
In sunny conditions on a track with variable bounce, the left-handed pair of Leon Johnson and Skipper Assad Fudadin joined forces to consolidate the position with level-headed batting.
Johnson, with an ODI fifty from three matches, looked well organised and sweetly drove leg-spinner Odean Browne down the ground for four.
Fudadin, who like Johnson has never managed a First Class ton despite getting into the 90s, played an elegant cover driven boundary off Lambert to bring the small crowd to life.
However, with the score on 117 and lunch 12 minutes, away Johnson was trapped LBW to Lambert for 23 from 82 balls and 77 minutes while Browne struck in the next over when for the second time in the game, Fudadin (8) played no shot and seemed unlucky to be LBW as two wickets tumbled at 117.
By Lunch Jamaica were in control with Guyana on 117-4 with Royston Crandon, one of only two batsmen in the Guyana side with a First Class century, unbeaten on four and Vishaul Singh yet to score.
The victory target of 240 from two sessions at that stage was just of academic interest with the South Americans looking to hold on for a draw.
After lunch Singh pulled a short ball from Lambert for four and along with Royston Crandon took the score to 135 before Crandon (8) was taken at bat/pad off Browne who bowled Singh (10) and trapped Esuan Crandon LBW first ball as Guyana slumped to 148-7.
Christian’s only First Class century was made against Jamaica in 2009 and yesterday he smashed Browne for four and clobbered him for a massive six before magnificently square-driving Taylor for a bullet-like boundary on the heavy outfield as he played his natural game.
Christian dumped Taylor over long-on for four but missed a big drive off the next ball and was comprehensively bowled by the Test pacer to leave the score on 168-8.
Browne continued to extract prodigious bounce from the other but it was Taylor who removed Permaul (2) when he drove loosely to cover at 171-9.
Bishoo hit four fours in his 19 before he edged Browne to slip to spark celebrations for the Jamaicans who will be hosted by the Windward Islands for their next game from Friday. The Guyanese take on the Leeward Islands at Bourda in their next game which also starts on Friday.
