– official cites sub-standard work
High winds accompanied by a sharp downpour yesterday destroyed the roof of a building that houses the library of the Cyril Potter College of Education (Teachers’ Training College) located at Turkeyen on the East Coast of Demerara.
It was around 08:40 hours when the security guards on duty as well as students housed in the nearby dormitories, heard the slapping of zinc, which was followed by a loud crash as almost the entire northern section of the roof of the building was blown away.
Fortunately there were no reported injuries to anyone as the facility had been closed for the weekend and no one was inside.
An official at the teachers training college initially declined to comment on the situation claiming that she was not on location when the incident occurred.
She however stated that the Chief Buildings Officer of the Ministry of Education was contacted and the contractor had already been notified.
Although significant damage was done to the roof which will require a hefty sum to repair, the official told this newspaper that the interior of the building and its contents were preserved.
A senior Education Ministry staffer told this newspaper that he was amazed at the damage done to the roof by the wind.
“When I got the news, I thought it was just a couple of zinc sheets,” the officer remarked.
He stated that the incident exposed the sub-standard work done by the contractor on the building which was the most recent of the lot in the compound to be renovated.
“We could understand a sheet or two but not the entire roof,” he lamented.
The official stated that there were not many books on the top floor and up to yesterday afternoon the school’s administrator along with the contractor were trying to get the water out of the top floor before any further damage to the facility could be caused.
“It should not affect classes because the bulk of the material (books) is not stored on the top floor. Access to the library will also not be affected,” he stressed.
