Basketball players in Berbice will have a chance to show off their skills when the Berbice Amateur Basketball Association bounces off its first tournament for the 2011 season today at the Vryman’s Erven court in New Amsterdam.
The association will roll off its programme with play in the annual Mashramani Basketball competition which will see four teams participating; namely Rose Hall Panthers, Fyrish Fire hawks, Smithfield Rockers and the New Amsterdam Warriors. Before that, an official opening ceremony involving the four teams will take place from 16:30 hrs.
The teams will first play each other in a round robin format with the top team opposing the other two teams in the semifinals.
The top two teams will then oppose each other in the finals. The tournament will be played over 12days and two nights with the semifinals and finals slated for the night action.
The winning teams and outstanding individual players will be presented with cash and other incentives. The games will be played over four quarters of 15 minutes each.
In today’s game the Smithfield Rockers will engage the Fyrish Fire Hawks in what is expected to be a keenly contested tussle.
The Rockers will depend on Jason Rose and Michael Bowen, while the Fire Hawks will be pitting their strength on Rayan Franklyn, Linden Joseph and Joel Fraser.
The competition will be played using FIBA rules and players are expected to adhere to the conduct of the GABF.
At the end of the competition an all Star Berbice team will be selected to oppose Diana Ravens in an exhibition match on February 19 at the Vryman’s Erven venue.
President of the association and national junior coach, Kirk Fraser, had stated that the association was hoping to have an active 2011 season.
He had stated that inter school, junior, female and inter area tournaments along with the usual club tournaments will be played this year and that the association will be looking to have more persons on the various national teams while continuing with their annual summer programmes.
