Young Warriors Cricket Club of Canje defeated Tamran Root Cricket Club of Hampshire by 31 runs to lift the 2010 New Building Society second-division 40 over title at the Cumberland Cricket Ground last weekend.
Witnessed by a large and colourful crowd on Sunday last, the home team was indebted to fine bowling by the veteran duo of Hubern Evans and Anil Beharry who captured seven wickets between them.
Batting first after winning the toss, Young Warriors were given an opening partnership of 23 in four overs before medium pacer Michael Ramdihal had Khemraj Harris caught behind for 8.
Exciting 13-year-old Shimron Hetmyer was then bowled by the impressive Ramdihal for 11 at 41 for 2 before the experienced Rudolph Baker was caught off the same bowler for a duck as the home team slipped to 47 for 3 by the 9th over.
Berbice junior player Linden Austin and Ishwar Singh then added a crucial 54 for the 4th wicket before Austin was caught off the bowling of off spinner Kevin Madramootoo for a well played 47 (4 fours). The rest of the Young Warriors batting did not offer any resistance as the Tamran Root bowlers dispatched them on a pitch which started to keep low.
Only Ishwar Singh 26 and Beharry (12) reached double figures as Young Warriors were dismissed for 146 in 35.3 of their allotted 40 overs. Michael Ramdihal took 3 for 30 from 6 overs, Dilip Rangasami 2 for 21 from 8 and Kevin Madramootoo 3 for 31 from 8. Satesh Dwarka and Hemendra Ramdihal took one each. Extras contributed a healthy 26.
Needing to achieve a gettable 147 in 40 overs to lift their first ever second-division title, Tamran Root suffered a setback in the first over bowled by off spinner Hubern Evans when opener Mohamed Altaf was stumped by wicketkeeper Ishwar Singh without scoring at 2 for 1.
Evans struck again in his second and third overs to send back the aggressive Lionel Seegobin (07) and Alvin Ramdass (10) which left Tamran Root reeling at 18 for 3 in the 5th over.
Their troubles got even deeper when Hemendra Ramdihal was given out LBW for 9 at 31 for 4 but a fighting fifth wicket partnership of 42 between Vijay Sukhra and skipper Michael Ramdihal gave their supporters some hope. But their resistance eventually ended when medium pacer Ameer Rahaman trapped Ramdihal LBW for 15.
Avinash Looknauth was bowled for 1 by off spinner Linden Austin and the veteran Beharry made sure that Tamran Root never recovered by taking three quick wickets including top scorer Vijay Sukhra LBW for a well composed 45 (2×4, 2×6).
Alvin Gobin supported Sukhra with 22 as the visitors were dismissed for 115 in 26 overs. Evans ended with 4 for 16 runs from 7 overs, Beharry 3 for 30 from 6; Rahaman, Shazad Khan and Linden Austin took one apiece.
BCB President Keith Foster at the presentation ceremony declared that the tournament was highly successful noting that a record breaking 110 teams took part. He expressed gratitude to the Board of Directors and Management of the new Building Society for their continued investment in Berbice cricket.
Manager of the New Building Society, Rose Hall Town Branch Mr. Rana Persaud congratulated the BCB on hosting another successful tournament while expressing his pleasure at the Board’s organising skills. Persaud stated that he was confident that the Management of the Society would renew the sponsorship for 2011.
Hubern Evans was named man-of-the-final for his four wicket haul while Young Warriors received $60,000 and the beautiful NBS trophy. The runner-up took home $30,000. In another developmental move by the BCB the eight teams which reached the quarterfinals of the tournament were presented with a pair of batting pads each.
