Millions of dollars in valuables went up in flames yesterday as a two storey building on 106, Croal Street, Stabroek was gutted.
Reports revealed that vagrants were last seen in the yard “burning something” which may have resulted in the fire. Police sources had confirmed that the fire may have been caused by “junkies” who were using fire to extract copper from coated wires.
The building that was razed shortly before 9:00 hours was partly wooden and concrete. It was fully grilled, however, but according to a neighbour, that did not stop vagrants from entering and doing as they pleased on a daily basis.
“The fire fighters were very prompt and did a good job, they should be commended,” she said.
She said that the building was last occupied August 2010 and belongs to Attorney-at-Law, Robert Hanoman, who randomly visits the property. It was also noted that the utilities connected to the building were severed.
