– cops baffled by failure to find bullet
Slain taxi driver, Charles Caesar, was laid to rest yesterday as detectives continue to search for his killer and investigate what some said are puzzling aspects about the case.
A post mortem revealed that the 24-year-old was shot in the region of the heart and it is suspected that he was slain by a passenger who had hired him.
It is believed that the killer used a .32 revolver.
According to a source the bullet passed through the victim and penetrated the front seat of the car. However, detectives found no trace of the bullet. There was also no blood in the car.
According to an official, a man who went to the scene shortly after hearing the gunshot said that Caesar exited the car shortly after being wounded.
The man reportedly intended to put the victim in the back seat and drive to the hospital when he realised that the car keys were missing.
Police are also puzzled by the fact that no one apparently saw the killer (s) leave the scene.
A Perry Street resident told Kaieteur News that she heard a gunshot shortly after 20:30 hrs last week Sunday. She then heard someone groaning.
A relative then alerted her that a white car was parked at the southern end of Perry Street.
The woman said that before they could go to the scene, two men came from a nearby alley and went to the vehicle.
The men then indicated that the driver was lying on the ground near the front passenger door.
She said that the driver was still alive and said that two men had attacked him.
Charles was taken by ambulance to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police found Caesar’s car ransacked. His two mobile phones, including a Blackberry, were missing and no money was found on the victim or in his car.
According to reports, a man came to the Ezee Runnings Taxi Service’s Lot 46 Sheriff Street, Campbellville base shortly before 23:00 hrs that night and asked Caesar if he was working.
Caesar indicated that he was, and the man entered the front passenger seat. Caesar then drove south along Sheriff Street.
Kaieteur News was told that dispatchers at the taxi service made several attempts to contact Caesar on his radio set but got no response.
Relatives said that Caesar owned the vehicle that he was driving, and had worked with Ezee Runnings Taxi Service for about a year.
