The Guyana Police Force is not the entity that detains children under the age of 14, according to Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee who was at the time being grilled in the National Assembly about the detention of minors.
Rohee said that the minister, under whose purview this falls, is Human Services and Social Security Minister Priya Manickchand. She was in charge of a facility that did accommodate juveniles.
Rohee was at the time responding to Shadow Home Affairs Minister Deborah Backer who was acase of the recent allegations of rape by an 11-year-old girl while in police custody.
Last December, a 14 year-old had alleged rape while in police custody.
Rohee told the House that the Sophia Juvenile Holding facility will be completed soon and will house girls between the ages of 14 and 18 who are held by the Police Force.
He did tell the House also that there is a $5M allocation for the rehabilitation of the female dormitory in New Amsterdam Berbice.
Some $60M has been approved in the National Budget for the Construction, rehabilitation of prison facilities among other expenditures for 2011.
