International Tennis Federation (ITF) Regional Development Officer, Anthony Jeremiah arrives in Guyana today for one of his routine four-day visits to the local tennis fraternity. Mr. Jeremiah who was invited by the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) in 2006 to help rejuvenate its tennis programme, has since made a tremendous contribution to the development of tennis in its grassroots form as mini-tennis in primary schools by providing tennis equipment and guidance to the association.
His work as the ITF Officer for the Caribbean affords him the opportunity to visit each Caribbean territory annually to monitor progress with programmes and to help with the identification of young talent for development.
According to a release the GLTA is taking the opportunity to promote some of its top Under 10 players from Georgetown and Berbice in a talent identification competition which will be held at the Pegasus Tennis Courts from 08:00hrs-12:00 hrs today.
The competition is geared to showcase players at the three levels of beginner tennis in the ‘Play and Stay’ programme where different colours and textures of balls are used at the different levels of player development.
Jeremiah will also work with the advanced Under 13 players at the National Park.
Among his activities with the young players and coaches, Jeremiah will also be paying courtesy calls on the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport and the Guyana Olympic Association to discuss developmental issues such as tennis administration, coaches’ development and facilities.
Jeremiah visited Guyana last year where he conducted sessions both in Georgetown and Berbice for junior players.
