The 2011 cycling programme (season) organised by National Coach Hassan Mohamed got off to an exhilarating start at the newly resurfaced National Park Cycling Circuit with 18 year-old Paul DeNobreiga pedaling to a well calculated victory over a seasoned line-up of riders.
Riding a smart race after a slow start, DeNobreiga, who continues to improve admirably in his short career to date, won the feature School Boys & invitational contest in 1 hour 20 minutes 32 seconds, crossing the finish line alone after jumping the pack with about 350 meters to the line.
In an exciting sprint home to complete the top six places, sprint-king Alonzo Greaves, outmuscled Robin Persaud, Mark Lewis, Kurt La Rose and Alex Mendes in that order.
Throughout the race, DeNobreiga’s did not feature as a possible winner but he rode a smart final lap to outfox his much more senior counterparts who were all looking comfortable as they approached the finish line.
The lead in the race changed at varying intervals, Walter Grant-Stuart, who secured the Special Award for athlete with Disability, continues to prove his worth among able bodied riders when he carried the pace and lead from lap 9 in tandem with Robin Persaud until lap 22.
Trailing the two for quite some time were DeNobreiga, Greaves and Montel Anthony who was dropped on lap 17.
Greaves and DeNobreiga connected with Grant-Stuart and Persaud mid way through lap 22 with O’Selmo linking two laps later. The Upper Demerara based O’Selmo decided to attack and went to front on lap 25 followed by the Berbice based Turhan Harris about 50 meters back.
His {O’Selmo} ambitious intentions did not last for long as the energy levels faded and he was eventually sucked in on lap 32 with Enzo Matthews and Greaves joining the quest for the top place.
Not surprising was the fact that the entire group connected on lap 33 and the many supporters who were on hand were looking forward to a great sprint home. But that was not to be as De Nobrega sensed the opportunity to jump the pack and did so without being pursued, eventually crossing the finish line all alone to record an impressive victory.
Persaud took 3 of the 8 prime prizes on offer with Grant-Stuart and O’Selmo collecting two each, the other went to Greaves; 25 riders faced the starting line.
Michael Anthony of Linden won the juvenile 10-lap showdown in fine fashion, sprinting away from the other competitors on lap 4 and never looked back to win in 24 minutes 11 seconds. Marlon King and Montel Anthony took 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Dexter Wilson was unstoppable in the 5-lap upright contest winning ahead of Andre Petty and Nimrod John in that order.
Female National champion Hazina Barrett continued where she left off from 2010 with victory in the boys & girls 12-14 3-laps duel; she won ahead of Romario Samuels and Naiomi Singh. Her winning time was 8 minutes 04 seconds.
In other results:

McDougal.

In Remarks before the presentation, Mohamed thanked the sponsors for their continued commitment towards the development of the sport. He also thanked the riders for coming out in their numbers to participate.
Another busy year is anticipated and Mohamed reminded cyclists to train hard and be prepared for a busy season.
Competition at the National Park will continue this Saturday with another 11-race programme while the first road race is set for Sunday on the West Demerara pedaling off from the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The annual road race held in memory of the late President Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham will be contested on February 20, pedaling off from Carifesta Avenue to Belfield and back. On February 26 action returns to the National Park, while on the 27th the West Demerara is the venue for another road race.
The month of March will be no different in terms of competition; races are fixed for the 6th, 13th and 27th in memory of the late President Cheddi Jagan.
