Fruta Conquerors forward Vurlon Mills coped the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Highest Goal Scorer awards when the Inaugural Mackeson/BK International Western Tigers Super 8 knock-out presentation was held yesterday at the BK Int. Canteen, Mandela Avenue.
Mills who guided Fruta Conquerors to the second place prize having lost the championship game to Pele netted a total of four (4) goals.
Pele took the first place prize of $500,000 and trophy while Conquerors pocketed $200,000 and trophy. The Guyana Defense Force who defeated the host team Western Tigers for 3rd place received a cheque for $100,000 while Western took home half that amount. The best goalkeeper award went to Pele’s custodian, former national keeper, Sean Johnson.
In brief remarks prior to the presentation of prizes, Club President Gordon Gilhuys thanked all the teams for participating in the inaugural tournament while informing that the competition will be played on an annual basis.
Gilhuys also noted that the games were all keenly contested and complimented all the teams for making the tournament a success.
Club Secretary Dexter Cush in a brief tournament review informed that a total of 22 goals were scored with 14 yellow cards being issued and one red, which was given in the 22nd minute of the final between Pele and Conquerors.
Public Relations Officer of main sponsor Ansa Mc al Trading, Darshanie Yussuf, in her remarks said that their company was interested in seeing football develop under the brand of Mackeson noting that they have been associated with many other tournaments under this brand.
“We will continue to invest in our youths to ensure that they go out there and do better for themselves and what we saw with this tournament was amazing. We were pleased, we were happy and next year let’s hope that it’s bigger and much, much better.”
BK International representative Lambert Chester stated his company is interested in the development of football in Guyana and that the reason why they made the move to adopt Western Tigers. The competition he said was held in good spirit which augurs well for the sport in Guyana.
“I do trust that as we continue to look at football development in Guyana though this tournament and others we can see Guyana eventually going past the CONCACAF stage.”
PRO of the Club Brentnol Bourne in moving the vote of thanks complimented and thanked the supporters for coming out in their numbers to cheer on their respective teams. He also extended gratitude to the Guyana Police Force, Media (print & electronic), Guyana Football Federation and the following sponsors; Mackeson, BK International, Stereo Sonic, Keishar Gift Shop, Toucan Industries, Hits & Jams TV, Cummings Electrical, King’s Jewelry World, National Communications Network, Star Party Rentals, Humphrey’s Bakery & Farm Products, Channel 13, Delmour Shipping and Exclusive Styles.
Hampers for the MVP, Highest Goal Scorer and Best Goal Keeper were donated by Toucan Industries.
