Bandits broke into one of the front windows and gained entry into the Central Methodist Church on Main Street, New Amsterdam some time Wednesday evening. They ransacked the vestry of the church as was evident in the number of items that were left strewn on the floor.
The act was discovered at 15:05 hrs Thursday when children gathered in the church hall for their usual afternoon lessons. The pastor of the church, Cheryl Isaacs, said that when she attempted to insert the key to open the church door, she discovered that the lock had jammed.
She stated that she was shocked at the brazen attack on the church, the fourth in recent times. The last break-in took place two years ago.
“I trust that the relevant authorities would investigate this attack and bring an end to churches being vandalized,” Rev Isaacs said.
According to Rev Isaacs, they had last used the church Tuesday evening and locked up at 19:30 hrs and left. A guard at a nearby electronics store confirmed that he heard sounds on Wednesday evening during the break-in.
The thieves apparently wanted to set the building on fire because they doused much of the floor and a door in the vestry with oil. Children’s Sunday school materials and crayons were left on the floor as well.
A dust bin filled with artificial flowers that had been lit by the bandits did not catch fire. The thieves also turned on the fairy lights and bulbs and then wrapped these in cloth, further demonstrating that the aim was to set the building on fire.
“This is total destruction they were talking about”, she said.
Altar linens, drapes and the pastor’s clerical robes were all ransacked and rummaged through.
They also used the occasion to quench their thirst by partaking in the Holy Communion grape juice. Several bottles of Welch’s Grape Juice were left half- empty on the tables and glasses of the substance with lemonade were left on the pews.
The thieves also left their footprints on a drum as well. There was further damage to two fans, drums, flowers, altar cloths and pastors’ vestments.
Rev Isaacs expressed disgust at the actions stating that the persons had no respect for God. They had committed this sacrilege during the very time when the world is celebrating Inter-Faith Harmony Week.
The pastor could not detail the items that had been stolen at the time. She stated that she would have to get an inventory from the sextant.
Rev Isaacs expressed frustration at this most recent attempt to burglarize her church and hoped that the police would catch the perpetrators this time. (Leon Suseran)
