Mother of five is LBI’s second snake bite victim

Another resident of Section ‘A’ Kersaint Park was yesterday morning rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation after a snake bit her.
Forty-year-old Karmalee Lindie was bitten on her foot by a snake that was in her home. The mother of five was bitten while she was taking her son to the lavatory.
Relatives said that one of Lindie’s children fell ill and she was taking him to the bathroom. The woman’s relative’s said that when Lindie pulled the blind, she stepped on something. Seconds later, she felt something bite her foot.
According to the woman’s relatives, she immediately turned on the light but saw nothing. Relatives said that they knew it was a snake bite because of “the two holes in she foot…and them did far apart”.
According to relatives, as soon as an alarm was raised, they tried treating the bite so as to aid in Lindie’s survival from LBI to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Relatives said that they applied Naphthalene and Vaseline on the wound.
On her way to the hospital, the woman’s tongue started to swell at a rapid rate.  The victim’s mother said that she fears that the snake is still in the house.
Relatives said that they are grateful that Lindie is alive, since just about two weeks ago, a woman in the area died from a snake bite. The deceased lived a stone throw away from where Lindie resides.
Residents of community said that there is a general fear in the area since “these two wap wap snake incidents”. The concern was raised about the snakes reproducing.
Some residents think that the snakes are escaping from a nearby resident who buys snakes for export since all victims of the snakes live in close proximity. One villager said that he is extremely fearful since he has young children and they might not be able to fight the venom as an adult would.
The man said that the first incident was alarming but this one is distressing. He said that what is most alarming is that the snake has not been caught.
Another resident of the community said that since the first incident, everybody in the neighbourhood cleaned his surroundings
“Everywhere I go now I watching around cause I get children to live for…but I can’t keep watch in the night to see when it coming,” said one resident.
Residents request that the area be fumigated to illuminate snakes and other harmful animals that may reside in the area. One man said that for over 15 years the community has not been fumigated.
