DEAR EDITOR,
Even a primary school student knows that there is an enormous difference between G$295,000 and US$295.
It is frankly unbelievable that a government minister could confuse the two and quote a price of G$295,000, instead of US$295. Ms. Webster would be mistaken to think the Guyanese population will easily dismiss such an error. It is even more surprising that such a mistake was made about the highly publicized (and somewhat controversial) Laptop Project by the Office of the President.
Clearly, President Jagdeo must be embarrassed by Ms. Webster’s comments! In fact, it has given the opposition parties much opportunity to accuse the Office of the President of incompetence.
I will refrain myself from commenting on the politics attached to the Laptop Project. However, I do want to say that the Guyanese population deserves competent politicians, not ones that cannot do basic arithmetic, or cannot accurately report numbers. If Ms. Webster can make a mistake on the simple matter of quoting the price of a laptop, what other mistakes is she capable of making?
Perhaps we should ask her to retake the CXC Math examination? What do you say Minister Webster? I’m sure you can easily arrange that.
