Shondell Alfred’s devastating knockout of Corrine Van Ryck DeGroot coupled with her convincing victory over Venezuelan Olga Julio last year have tipped the scales in her favour and she has subsequently earned the nod for the prestigious award of Sportswoman of the year 2010.
Bodybuilder, Hugh Ross easily copped the Sportsman of the year award following his sterling achievement where he copped the Mr. Universe Masters bodybuilding title. His runner-up is cricketer, Davendra Bishoo.
Alfred secured the honour in front of Commonwealth Games silver medalist, Aliann Pompey, who earned the runner up spot.
The achievement of the diminutive boxer marked a year of hard work in the gym and received favourable commendation when her coach Sebert Blake received a similar prestigious award for the Sports Coach of the Year. The Alfred/Blake achievement follows closely on the heals of international awards procured by both principals having been adjudged Most Improved fighter of the Year and Coach of the Year respectively, by the International Woman’s Boxing Association (WIBA).
Chelsea Edghill copped the Junior Sportswoman of the year award while her runner up is Ashley Khalil.
The junior sportsman award went to sprinter, Chavez Ageday with U19 cricketer, Amir Khan taking the runner-up spot.
The awards were announced yesterday morning after a panel consisting of journalists, sports administrators, representatives of the business community and government sports officials convened for about two hours of deliberations.
At the conclusion of the process it was decided not to issue an award for the sports journalist in the print media after several rounds of voting failed to distinguish any particular person. However, Marlon Munroe of the Stabroek News and Franklyn Wilson of the Kaieteur News received honourable mention for their application and dedication to the trade during the fiscal year.
Orlando Charles, whose presence at sports events was noticeable, received the award for the Sports Photographer of the year while television reporter, Jermain Carter of National Communications Network (NCN) copped the top award in his department for the non-print media.
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation earned the nod for the Sports association of the year while the Guyana Table Tennis Association won the Most Improved Association award. The Female Sports Official award went to the hard working and dedicated Dr. Karen Pilgrim, while President of the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association, Peter Green ‘lifted’ the Male Sports Official award.
The Sports Team of the year award went to the Lady Jaguars National Football team while cyclist, Walter Grant-Stuart secured the special award for the athlete with disability.
The award ceremony would be held on February 25 at the National Cultural Centre.
