Orlando, FL. – The Guyanese American community in Central Florida will celebrate Guyana’s 41st Republic anniversary with a fundraising gala to be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the historic Ballroom at Church Street, in downtown Orlando.
This fundraising event, hosted by the Guyanese American Cultural Association of Central Florida (GACACF), has been held annually since 2005.
Proceeds from this event have helped the Dharm Shala in New Amsterdam, Berbice with the construction of a kitchen and the provision of beds, the Uncle Eddie’s Home in Georgetown with the repair of its roof and fence, a children’s sanctuary on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway with the provision of potable water and a donation of medicines valued at US$20,000 to a medical outreach mission to Guyana. In the US proceeds from this event have in the past assisted Guyanese American victims of Hurricane Katrina, and other worthy causes.
This year part proceeds from the gala will go towards a number of projects including the Linden Fund, the GACACF Scholarship Fund and charities in Essequibo and Berbice.
The guest-of-honor and keynote speaker at the 2011 Gala will be Dr. Vincent Adams, currently the highest ranking Guyanese American serving in the United States Federal Government. He oversees the US nuclear energy programe within the Department of Energy.
In addition to Dr. Adams, the GACACF will honor Commander Russell Permaul of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Mr. Eldon Bremner, General Manager of the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel and Mrs. Urla King, a medical specialist and community worker in Central Florida.
Among the companies already committed to sponsorship of this event are Laparkan Shipping, Caribbean Supercenter supermarket, Seaworld, Luxury Ridges, Inc., Seafreight Agencies and The Highland Agency.
