With its renewed drive to spread the game of Table Tennis countrywide and make Guyana once more a force to be reckoned with in the Caribbean, the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) under the renewed leadership of Commissioner of Police Henry Green is forging ahead with its expansion and development programme.
A one day coaching programme has been organised for tomorrow February 5 at the New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School for school children in Berbice. All school children are invited to be a part of the day’s activity which begins at 10:00hrs.
The GTTA has made national coaches and former national players Colin France and Ray ‘Copter ‘Anderson available for the one day programme.
They will be assisted by Berbician base former women’s champion Desiree Lancaster and junior champ Petal Bennet along with former and presents players including Errol Alphonso and Floyd Conway.
Students who are interested in learning to play the game and do not have racquets are still invited to attend as the organizers will make racquets available.
This development comes a mere days after a meeting was held between executives of the GTTA and interesting stakeholders and players in Berbice which was held on
Saturday January 29 at the Rose Hall Community Centre in East Canje.
At that meet the decision was taken to resuscitate the game in Berbice, plan for the establishment of the Berbice sub association and make plans for a Berbice Pre Mashramani tournament.
A one day pre Mashramani tournament has been planned for Wednesday February 16 at Port Mourant Training School. The tournament will be played in three categories; U-13, U-18 and Open and is open to Berbicians only, with play in both the male and female departments. Outstanding performers will be selected to participate in the Mashramani tournament later this month in Georgetown.
Commissioner Green, a former top flight player in his hay days, is throwing his full weight behind the expansion and developmental programme. Most of the equipment including tables, racquets, balls and other equipment for the one day tournament will be supplied by the GTTA.
Training seminars for persons interested in becoming officials will also be held shortly in Berbice.
The interim body is headed by Floyd Conway and also includes Gibran Hussein, Desiree Lancaster, Superintendent Ian Amsterdam, Sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan, Brentnol Richards, and Levan Buchey, Businessman and former Mayor Errol Alphonso is assisting in an advisory capacity, with Samuel Whyte assisting with Public Relations.
The body was expected to meet yesterday at the Rose Hall Community Centre to finalize arrangements for the one day tournament.
Commissioner of Police Henry Green is expected to be at the launching of the Berbice tournament.
