Yesterday, four weeks before her 105th birthday, centenarian Cecilia Goddard Hughes called Gertrude, drew her last breath. She passed away at her residence, 2950 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Ms. Hughes was born on March 4, 1906, at Versailles on the West Bank Demerara. She was one of four children for her parents, who were among the first cane cutters from Barbados.
The amiable senior citizen, who was wheelchair bound because of a mild stroke she suffered a few years back, bore ten children of whom three are alive, the eldest being 77-year-old Ruby Mc Clure.
Ms. Hughes has five grandchildren who are all over 50 years old. She has three generations of grandchildren, and relatives revealed that each generation started with a male child.
According to her daughter, Ruby Mc Clure, Ms. Hughes was a devout Seventh Day Adventist for over four decades.
