Among the many subjects of his lucid presentation at the Guyana Olympic Association’s (GOA) Awards and Appreciation Evening last Saturday, Dr. Ian McDonald called for the preservation of the historic Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground, Bourda.
“As that club’s oldest member, can I make a special plea that Bourda not be forgotten as one of the great cricket grounds of the world,” McDonald implored, after he had told an audience which included sport luminaries that he is a member of GCC for 55 years.
The use of GCC, one of world cricket’s earlier venues, has been a subject of omnipresent debates since the advent of the Guyana National Stadium at Providence five years ago. Since the erection of the Stadium, Bourda has struggled for a purpose in local sport.
“The Stadium has been a success and that is to be applauded, but please, let Bourda be preserved not only in our memories but as a place where cricket will always be played,” McDonald pleaded before outlining some of the reasons why the club should be revered.
He said that GCC celebrated 150 years in 2008 and is one of the Caribbean’s oldest cricket clubs.
Apart from that, he said that the club has the same heritage in the world. “It is a national treasure; it should continue to be given the honour of hosting important cricket occasions,” McDonald told his audience in a bid to save the historic cricket venue.
Since its relegation, Bourda, which is also home to the GCC hockey team, has hosted some inter-county cricket and trial matches, football games and the schools’ track and field competitions.
It has also hosted parties and international concerts to find usefulness.
There have been talks about a merger between GCC and the neighbouring, Georgetown Football Club (GFC) to complete one sport venue.
However, the status of those meetings, a final decision, if any was made, are yet to be formally disclosed to the media.
