Manager of the Guyana National Rugby squad currently preparing for the upcoming IRB World Sevens Series in Las Vegas, USA Robin Roberts believes the team could spring a few surprises at the tournament.
Roberts, who has managed various levels of teams since 2004 was speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly after watching them, conclude another session, at the National Park.
“I think that this team has a very good chance of winning at least two games in the preliminary round, especially if they stick to the game plan and execute properly,” Roberts told this newspaper.
He, however, said that the unfortunate late arrival of Technical Director Canadian Spencer Robinson has affected a very important phase in their build-up.
“Robinson’s late arrival which is entirely due to the bad weather that is blanketing most of North America means that the technical and tactical aspects of the preparations have been affected and when you combine that with the absence of three key players it will be felt,” Roberts indicated.
According to him, those discrepancies could work two ways, first it could serve as motivation for the team or it could be felt when the team plays opposition such as Series leaders England, who incidentally they face in their opening game.
Roberts has a wealth of experience as Manager and was at the helm of teams such as the NAWIRA Championships of 2008, 09 and 10, while he also managed a development team in 2004.
His duty according to him is to look after the logistical aspects pertaining to the team’s comfort and all other related functions.
Meanwhile, Roberts disclose that the three players who’re presently nursing injuries UK-based Rupert Giles, Elwin Chase and Chris Singh are all responding to treatment and physiotherapy positively and are expected to make full recoveries before departure.
The team’s physiotherapist is Arianne Mangar.
