More than a dozen young men were picked up in various parts of the city and taken to the Brickdam Police Station by policemen yesterday. The arrest sparked a convergence of mothers at the entrance to the police station.
According to the mothers, their sons were picked up from the road immediately after school and wrongfully taken into the lock-ups because the policemen found a ‘joint’ on the ground where these boys had assembled.
However, according to one of the policemen, the youths were very unruly. And while in custody they were anything but schoolboys. They were hostile, aggressive and even foul-mouthed.
Nevertheless the mothers who were present at the scene said that the policemen were disrespectful to the youths and this disrespect caused them to behave rudely.
It was the opinion of others that the police are on a campaign to prevent criminal activity, something that is being perpetrated by men of school age.
Some of the youths were later released whiles the others were booked pending further investigation.
