A Lance Corporal of the Guyana Defense Force yesterday appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of unlawful assault.
Police prosecutor Venetta Pindar told the court that on January 30, last, in Georgetown, Jermine Jackson 27, assaulted Alicia Dey.
The solider told the court that he has been a serving member of the GDF for three years and is a first time offender.
Pindar added that the accused and Dey shared an intimate relationship. Dey is also the mother of his child. The court was told on the day in question Dey received a text message on her cellular phone the accused told her to give him the phone. After the phone was handed over to him, he began to browse through the phone and to read the text that Dey had received. After reading the text Jackson became annoyed and cuffed his girlfriend in her face and mouth.
To the charge he pleaded guilty. He was unrepresented by an attorney.
The Magistrate inquired from him if he did cuff the woman in her mouth, and Jackson replied in the affirmative.
A probation report was however ordered and sentencing was postponed for February 18. The accused was also allowed bail in the sum of $30,000.
Also appearing before the same Magistrate was Kevin Anthony who was brought by investigating ranks of the Guyana Police Force to answer to the charge of simply larceny.
Anthony’s address was given as lot 298 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown.
Based on a police report, on January 28, at the Stabroek Market he snatched two gold hand bands from Anjini Harris while she was walking along the road.
After an alarm was raised, ranks that were in close proximity gave chase. Within minutes the suspect was apprehended and a search was carried out on his person. One of the bands was found in his pants pocket. He was taken to the station where he was charged and placed in custody.
The accused pleaded not guilty and was unrepresented by an attorney. Standing from the prisoners dock Anthony accused the police of brutalization. He went on to explain that on the day in question he was standing in front of the Stabroek Market when he saw several persons running towards him. The accused added that before he knew what was happening the police grabbed him from behind and accused him of snatching two gold bands.
After listening to his explanation, the Magistrate allowed him bail in the sum of $125,000 and made the matter returnable on February 9.
