Dwayne Joseph, 25, of 91 Tucber Park, New Amsterdam, was on Tuesday granted $300,000 bail by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
According to prosecutor Inspector Satrohan on January 4, Joseph was the driver of motor car PHH 6528 in which Renaldo Artiga, 21, Vincent Vandenburg, 25, Nigel Henry and Mohabir were all passengers.
Around 21:15h the speeding car, while trying to overtake another car on the Canje Bridge, hit that car before losing control and crashing into a utility pole at the western end of the Canje Bridge.
Joseph and Vandenburg were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital while Artiga and Henry were briefly hospitalized at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
Mohabir was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
And in a related matter the police have suspended Chetram Moonsammy’s driver’s licence.
Moonsammy of Lot 36 Johanna South, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following investigations into a fatal accident that occurred on October 29, 2010, at Susannah Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, which resulted in the death of several persons.
His driver’s licence has been suspended pending the outcome of the matter.
