John Sampson appeared on Tuesday before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of robbery under arms.
He pleaded not guilty. He was unrepresented.
According to police prosecutor, Corporal Venetta Pindar, on October 13, 2010, in Georgetown, Sampson in the company of two of his associates, forcefully entered the home of Marlin De Silva and held her at knife point while demanding that she hand over everything.
The prosecutor went on to explain that on the day in question, three men entered the home of De Silva while she was tending to her elderly father. Sampson then pushed De Silva into a bedroom and took a knife he was carrying and cut off her underwear before having sex with her against her will.
After committing the act, the men carted off with several items raging from cellular phone to Avon products totaling $675,000 before making good their escape.
The matter was reported but investigating ranks were unable to apprehend the three suspects. Sampson’s luck ran out on him several days ago when De Silva saw him braking into another house. She in turn notified the police who responded promptly and arrested the suspect.
He was taken to the station where De Silva identified him as one of the men that robbed and raped her. Hence he was charged for the offence.
Corporal Pindar objected to bail and the accused will make his next court appearance on February 17.
Also making her first court appearance before the same Magistrate was Ramona Ally 18, of Sixth Avenue Bartica, charged with simple larceny.
To the charge the teen pleaded guilty.
Police Inspector Joel Ricknauth told the court that between January 27 and January 28, last, at 269 BB Eccles, East Bank Demerara, Ally pilfered one blackberry cellular phone worth $70,000 property of Troy Vancooten.
The inspector told the court that on the day in question the accused visited the home of Vancooten with several other friends. It was during that time that Vancooten placed the said phone on a table.
On January 28, as he attempted to use the phone he realised that it was missing. As a result, a confrontation was held between himself and Ally and she admitted that she took the phone.
The matter was reported to the police and the accused was arrested and taken to the station when she again admitted to the offence, hence she was charged.
When asked by the Magistrate if she did committed the unlawful act, Ally told the court that she did not “steal” the phone, she “take it”, “My worship I saw it on the rail and I take it. I didn’t steal it.”
Ally also told the court that she is employed as a sales clerk at a grocery store.
The Magistrate then inquired if any one of her relatives was present in court, Ally responded in the negative.
A probation report was however requested and the accused was remanded. The matter will be called again on February 17.
