– Robinson due today, delayed by bad weather
As the national rugby squad currently preparing to participate in the IRB World Seven Series in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA on February 12-13 await the arrival of Technical Director Spencer Robinson from Canada, Head Coach / Player Theodore Henry speaking with Kaieteur Sport at the National Park yesterday revealed that all the players concluded the Beep Test with a passing grade.
Henry, who has been spearheading the sessions since its inception, disclosed that there were a few players who the management felt had not performed satisfactorily during the phase.
Head Coach Theodore Henry (arms outstretched) makes a point during an interactive session shortly after on-field practice yesterday.
“Some of the guys were just at the average we set so they had to come back and satisfy us that they could achieve the mark and I’m happy to report that they’ve all surpassed the grade,” Henry mentioned.
Henry said that there is still a lot of work to be done before the team departs, but it is more on the tactical side and there is where the TD will take charge.
“Most of the work will be tactical such as getting our patterns correct, our alignments and communication and I’m optimistic that by the time we are ready to leave every detail will be covered,” the Head Coach related.
Commenting on the game simulations that were conducted over the past weekend, Henry said he was extremely happy with the intensity and quality of the games.
“Everybody brought out the best in each other both in terms of the physical and technical aspects and it really resembled a game at the international level,” he stated.
He felt that this current team matches that of any other in terms of the physical fitness and this is despite the short period of preparation.
He also noted the support of the two locally based players who received bans from the Union, pointing out that their presence and contributions during the sessions have been helpful and encouraging.
President of the Union Christopher ‘Kit’ Nascimento in his comments said he still believed that the players needed to bring their fitness levels up a bit more, adding that in his opinion only 80% of the players are fully fit and up to international standards right now.
“I think that the others will have to attain a higher level very soon.”
Nascimento disclosed that at the level the team is playing right now fitness makes the difference as to whether you win or lose.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that TD Robinson will arrive today after being delayed due to the bad weather being experienced in North America.
Nascimento said three players are on the injury list and they are Elwin Chase, who is nursing a strained muscle, Rupert Giles (ankle injury) and Christopher Singh (a sore knee).
