Following intensive investigations, the police are preparing to charge two persons in connection with the murder of 37-year-old Suresh Bhola, who was stabbed to death during a brawl outside a Strathspey, East Coast Demerara bar early Sunday morning.
The police had detained several persons for questioning into the matter and according to reports, the Director of Public Prosecutions has advised that two of them be charged with the capital offence.
A police source told this newspaper that the two suspects had opted not to give police any statements, claiming that they were not doing so in the absence of their attorney.
This was after they were implicated in statements given by the other detainees.
Many were of the view that the police would have had a difficult time cracking the case given the number of persons involved but relatives of the dead man are now comforted by the fact that at least investigators have made a quick breakthrough.
The police had detained more than 20 persons shortly after the incident but by late Sunday afternoon only six men who were described as suspects remained in custody. Bhola was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital, around 00:15 hours on Sunday. He was picked up outside the bar bleeding from a wound to his abdomen, which he sustained during a brutal fight that had erupted among patrons of the bar.
Police in a press statement said that Suresh Bhola was found lying on an access road at Strathspey with a wound to his abdomen and was taken to the GPHC where he was pronounced dead.
According to eyewitnesses, the father of three was playing the role of peacemaker when he was stabbed.
