Following requests by the executive of the Guyana Softball League (GSL), Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony has accepted an invitation as patron of that organisation. The Minister has formally accepted the position at a recent meeting organised by the executives.
A release from the Guyana Softball League (GSL) informed that the executive was delighted by the Minister’s acceptance of the position. The sports body regards it as a strategic move expected to validate the sport and give it more stakeholder support.
The release further informed that following the efforts of its executive interest and participation in the sport has increased tremendously. This marks the first time the GSL has installed a patron and the executives are excited of the prospect of developing the sport beyond the shores of Guyana.
Additionally, the GSL plans to launch the inter association championships among teams in its sixteen affiliated associations. This is scheduled for after the conclusion of the imminent GT&T 10/10 tournament. Plans are also in train to run off a school tournament that will involve institutions in the outlying areas where the sport is hardly played. Executives of the GSL further plan to resuscitate the game at the county level even as it is currently engaged in discussions with an affiliated international body to bring to fruition a tri series involving the male and female national teams.
The executive said that the GSL wishes to ensure participation of all Guyanese in the development of the game.
The Guyana Softball League is responsible for the organising of the sport and is responsible for all national teams and inter county teams as dictated by the by laws of its constitution. Club teams are therefore urged to register their team and players with their respective area committees in order to be eligible for selection on any national and inter county teams.
