Plywood supplies, at least to meet local demands, are expected to normalise in June, Government says.
Speaking at a forestry meeting yesterday at Kingston, Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud, yesterday disclosed that Barama Company Limited which closed its plywood operations last year after technical problems, has assured that production at least to cater for the local market will be improved by the mid-year timeline.
Late last year, Barama said that a boiler which is a crucial component of its Land of Canaan operations experienced difficulties. The problems were blamed on a few workers.
More than 200 workers were sent home and the company assured that replacement of the boiler will take a year.
However, Barama has committed to install a smaller boiler by June to meet local demands.
The local market, especially with a booming housing sector, has taken a heavy beating from the shortage of plywood, forcing a number of importers to ship in the favoured construction material.
In early December, Barama had also shipped in a quantity but said the cost of shipping remained a major challenge.
