After last Caribbean T20 Cricket tourney
By Sean Devers
Not too long after West Indies off-spinner Shane Shillingford was deemed by the ICC to be bowling with an illegal action resulting in his non-selection for the World Cup squad, nine bowlers have allegedly been reported by Umpires officiating in last month’s Caribbean T20 tournament.
A source close to the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) yesterday confirmed to Kaieteur Sport that a Guyanese is among those reported after the Umpires in the tournament which was played in Antigua and Barbados, had expressed concern with their actions.
While most of the Regional cricket officials who were contacted for a comment declined to comment on the issue, the head of the Trinidad and Tobago Selection panel Dudnath Ramkessoon has publicly confirmed that the bowling action of T&T’s pacer Kevon Cooper and off-spinner Sunil Narine was under scrutiny.
“I am having a meeting with the two young men tomorrow (today) morning and I would prefer to speak to them first before I say anything else. I don’t want them to be reading about it in the papers before I get a chance to speak to them,” Ramkessoon was quoted as saying on an internet story yesterday.
When contacted yesterday, nobody in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) was aware of any member of the Guyana team being on the list.
This suggests that the Guyanese reported was not a member of the Guyana team, which this year failed to reach the semi-finals for the first time in a Regional First-Class competition.
Former West Indies pacer Jermaine Lawson was banned from International cricket after his action was deemed illegal although he continued to operate at the Regional level long after his action raised eyebrows in the 1998 and 1999 West Indies under-19 series.
