Making full use of the transfer window, Amelia’s Ward United have moved 5 points ahead of Bakewell Topp XX following their fifth consecutive win as the excitement builds in the Upper Demerara Football Association Open League.
Amelia’s Ward swamped Vasco 5-0 on Wednesday last when competition continued at the Linden Foundation Ground to take their points tally to 18.
With two more games to play, the Amelia’s Ward players along with coach Patrick Dey have not only managed to rebuild the team but also their fan base and are looking to give their community their first league title in decades.
Bakewell Topp XX who held the lead with 13 points at the Christmas break are yet to get into winning mode losing consecutive games to the boys from the Ward and Winners Connection.
However, archrivals Milerock and Netrockers also have their sights set on the top spot with 13 and 12 points respectively having two more games remaining. The two will meet on February 3rd at Bayroc Ground.
With a total of 13 games remaining in the first league to be played in three years, the bottom four teams are battling to remain at the First division level since the league is being played to determine the First and Second division clubs in the association.
Over $500,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs.
The League is sponsored by Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC), Mr. Wayne Ebba, Mr. Mark Grimmond, Mr. Shawn Hopkinson, Mr. Bonnie Davis, Mr. Horace James of the Linmine Secretariat, Mr. Andrew McBean (NCN Linden) and Mr. Gorden Gumbs of the Linden Hospital Complex.
