Low cost airline REDjet, which promises air tickets for the Caribbean from US$9.99, is gearing to lift up soon, airline sources have confirmed.
REDjet would effectively be the cheapest airline in the Caribbean and would initially offer service to Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica.
The start up of the airline was announced in October last year, and the company is gearing to begin flying within months, sources stated. The airline has two MD-82 jet aircraft which are fitted with 149 seats and powered by two JT8D-217A engines.
The airline intends to open bases across the region as it develops routes to exciting destinations across the Caribbean, Latin America and the United States.
Fares will start at US$9.99, excluding government taxes and charges, and will be available through the company’s website, call centre and retail locations.
The company is private owned and incorporated in St Lucia. Its corporate offices are situated in the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados, where it will open its first aircraft base with its initial two aircraft. Sources said the company could add another aircraft by the end of the year.
REDjet was founded in 2006 when Robbie Burns, working in the region at the time, was amazed by the cost of flights within the region and on routes to the US and Latin America.
He found that there was a large disparity in the market as Caribbean carriers were losing substantial sums year after year while the US carriers flying into the region were reporting the Caribbean to be their most profitable market.
Working with Ian, the father and son team built REDjet in conjunction with investors and expert management with a simple vision to develop the first Caribbean Low Fares Airline and bring the substantial economic and social benefits of Low Cost Travel experienced from Africa to Brazil and Fiji to France to the Caribbean.
REDjet is a privately owned airline with a mixture of international backers.
